WBRE ((nick)) imagine saving 50- thousand dollars a year on your electricity bill.... that's exactly the kind of result a local school district is seeing after making some upgrades. eyewitness news reporter haley bianco shows us how the school is benefitting. ((haley))jim thorpe area school district just cut it's annual energy bill by 50-thousand'd they do it?they switched from flourescent lights to l-e-d. here's a look at some of the new lights in the high school. principal, tom lesisko, shows me around and says he's seen a noticebale impact with the new lights. tom lesisko // high school principal "i'm using 1/3 electricity in my office." to get his office to be this bright, he used to need all three flourescent bulbs.but now, three bulbs is almost too bright! so he usually just turns on one. tom lesisko // high school principal "smart technology is helping us save electricity usage and save money and making people aware of turning lights off everywhere."here's a look at the high school gym. the lights in here are motion activated.and the same goes for some of the classrooms. brian gasper // superintendent "money's always tight and we're really just trying to use it more efficiently."light upgrades are a multi-million dollar expense for the district... but it's an investment. brian gasper // superintendent "bascially the program is paid for over the course of 15 years because of the savings we realize from using energy efficient items." in addition to the electricity the district saved, they also received money through a rebate with p-p-l which presented the district with a check for more than 34- thousand dollars.haley bianco // eyewitness news"district officials and school faculty tell me they're happy with the changes, and hope to see more energy saving projects in the future."tom lesisko // high school principal "it sets an example for everyone -- how we can conserve if we think about it and do the right thing."in jim thorpe haley bianco eyewitness news.
