(( michael sklanowsky, nv energy customer "i am withstanding 80 degree temperatures when i sleep at night." )) ((brittany edney)) n-v energy wants to increase its basic service charge 31-percent. going from 12 dollars and 75 cents... up to 16 dollars and 76 cents. but the utility says a lower usage rate will offset that hike. ((shawn elicegui, senior vp of customer operations, nv energy "the average bill would stay the same regardless of whether the basic service charge is $16.76 or $15 because the other part of the bill, the volume changes to reflect the total average bill." )) ((brittany edney)) aarp nevada director barry gold says this proposal would hurt low income families and seniors befire they can even turn on a lightswitch. (( barry gold, director of government relations, aarp nevada "shifting more fixed costs for customers in the form of a higher monthly customer charge sends the wrong signal about electricity and is contrary to the policy to encourage energy conservation." )) ((brittany edney)) for customers like sklanoswky-- they don't have the luxury of saving their way out of this sort of increase.
